Exterior Renovation and Addition — Louisville, Kentucky
This home was designed in 1953 by architect Werner Feibes and is a classic example of mid-century modern design. Much of the original redwood interior remains intact and is what attracted the owners when they were relocating to Louisville from California.
The flat roof was covered at some point by a sloping roof structure that addressed insulation and drainage but did not tie in with the aesthetics of the original house. Curb appeal was lacking. The homeowners came to Rock Paper Hammer with the request to remove the sloped roofs and return to the flat roof design, as well as to improve the Entry and Garage connection which had been later additions.
RPH designed a system to go on top of the original flat roof that provided the required thermal insulation and drainage slope, while keeping the appearance as true as possible to the mid-century design. A more dramatic single sloping roof with clerestory windows was added over the entry and garage.
The house was re-sided with a combination of cumaru wood and HardiPlank, and the existing brick was painted. The deck across the back was rebuilt in cumaru with a cable railing system, and a new mid-level deck was added to better connect the upper and lower areas. New interior space includes a sunny entry foyer that seamlessly flows to the living area and a small office.
